Ethereum’s Struggles: Why ETH Is Losing Ground to Bitcoin

Ethereum’s value against Bitcoin has hit a four-year low. The ETH/BTC ratio now stands at 0.028, dipping as low as 0.027 recently. This sharp decline reflects shifting investor sentiment and growing institutional preference for Bitcoin ETFs.

Institutional Money Favors Bitcoin

Institutional investors are pouring money into Bitcoin. Spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted a staggering $35 billion in inflows, while Ethereum ETFs pulled in only $2.6 billion. Big players like MicroStrategy continue to boost Bitcoin demand. Ethereum lacks such strong institutional backers, which is hurting its performance.

Technical and Network Challenges

Ethereum faces several technical hurdles. The Pectra upgrade, initially expected to drive growth, has been delayed. Network activity is also declining, with active validators dropping by 1% last month. Meanwhile, competitors like Solana are grabbing market share, capturing over 50% of DEX trading volume.

Adding to the woes, Ethereum’s supply has grown by 5.4% since February 2024. This shift toward inflation contrasts with the deflationary expectations set after the Merge upgrade. Such supply issues have shaken investor confidence.

Leadership Woes and Internal Struggles

Ethereum’s leadership has faced criticism. The Ethereum Foundation’s internal tensions surfaced when Aya Miyaguchi’s interview sparked controversy, prompting Vitalik Buterin to address governance concerns. This perceived lack of clear direction adds to investor uncertainty.

Is There Hope for Ethereum?

Despite the struggles, some analysts see a glimmer of hope. Bullish sentiment indicators suggest potential recovery later this year. The Pectra upgrade, expected by March, could help reverse the downtrend. Additionally, Etherealize, a new initiative backed by Buterin, aims to attract Wall Street investors.

For now, Bitcoin’s dominance seems unshaken. Its clear narrative and robust institutional adoption give it an edge over Ethereum’s complex ecosystem. But as crypto markets evolve, Ethereum may yet find its footing.
